SAVE Act Supporters Seek Discharge Petition
Supporters of the SAVE Act are collecting signatures this week on a discharge petition which will allow the act, H.R. 4088, to move to the floor of the House for a vote. The petition now has 169 of the 218 signers it needs to go into effect. The SAVE Act is a vitally important step toward effective immigration law enforcement. Its key provision requires employers to check the legal status of employees through the E-Verify system. Lack of effective verification has long been a weak link in stopping illegal immigration.
Below is a list of Discharge Petition Signers. If you don't see your House Representative listed, please call his/her office and ask them to sign the discharge petition. Act now — opponents of the bill are fighting the discharge petition, hoping eventually to kill or weaken the bill.

Gates Seeks More H-1Bs
Microsoft chairman and founder Bill Gates has called on Congress to admit more foreign workers in the "high-tech" science and engineering fields under the H-1B visa program. Said Gates, "America will lose its status as a leader in technological innovation unless it allows more skilled workers to enter the country." The reason, he maintained, is that there are not enough qualified Americans to fill high-tech positions.
Comment: Many take issue with Gates' claim that high-tech is something that too few Americans will do. A report by the Urban Institute, cited in BusinessWeek (10/26/08) found no shortage of qualified U.S. workers. Indeed, quite a number have had to look for employment in other fields. A study at Duke University last year reached a similar conclusion.
The real appeal of H-1B workers, critics of the program charge, is that companies like Microsoft can pay them lower wages and work them harder than Americans. Dr. Ron Hira, Assistant Professor of Public policy at the Rochester Institute of Technology cites data from the U.S. immigration service (USCIS) to make this point. Said Hira, "Gates has characterized H-1B workers as possessing 'unique talent' and skills and being paid large sums of compensation (>$100k). But the facts belie all these characterizations. The typical H-1B holder holds a Bachelor's degree and is being paid $50k."
