AIC Surveys Border

AIC recently sent a fact-finding team to the U.S./Mexican border in Arizona. Among its findings was that the newly built fence on the border would be no more than an inconvenience to border crossers. The section they saw was only about nine feet tall, and its mesh structure provided easy handholds for climbing. One man with the party had no trouble climbing to the top from the American side.

Another finding was a widespread perception that some U.S. officials are corrupt, due to payoffs from drug and alien smugglers. To remedy this situation, our team recommended deployment of troops to the border, in rotating deployments to discourage opportunities for bribery.

Troops are necessary also to counter ongoing incursions by the Mexican Army. During the past decade, according to the Department of Homeland Security, Mexican forces have crossed our border on more than 200 occasions; often it is charged to assist smugglers. Opponents of troop deployment long have maintained that border control is properly the job of nonmilitary enforcement. But incursions by Mexican forces clearly call for a defensive military response.

While on the border, our team interviewed an American rancher who barely escaped death when a squad of uniformed Mexican soldiers, without provocation, opened fired on him and a group of companions. As bullets whizzed by them, they jumped into a vehicle and sped off. The Mexicans followed across the U.S. border and kept following for some time.

The rancher was able to film the soldiers as they prepared to shoot and record the sounds of their gunfire. AIC is using this and other footage to make a new video dealing with the border. Soon we will give a shortened version of the video to congressmen, when our representative goes to Washington to present our findings on the border and make recommendations.
