H.R. 4088, the SAVE act, would combat illegal immigration by increasing the number of Border Patrol and ICE agents. It also would require employers to use the E-Verify program, which enables them to check with the federal government to determine the legal status of employees. H.R. 4088 has 130 co-sponsors.
The sponsor of the SAVE act is Rep. Heath Shuler (D-NC). Shuler's office contacted AIC and said that the congressman specifically is seeking to have the House members listed below to add their names as cosponsors of H.R. 4088.
AIC members, if any of those House members are your representatives, please contact them and ask them to sign on as cosponsors. Making the E-Verify program mandatory next year is an important objective for the immigration reform movement. Lack of an effective means to identify legal status long has been a major stumbling block for immigration law enforcement.
To contact House members by e-mail you may go to our website www.immigrationcontrol.com, and click on "Legislative Action Center." To get mailing addresses and phone numbers, click on "Elected Officials." Another way to contact Washington by phone is to call the Capitol Hill Switchboard at (202) 224-3121. Then ask the operator to connect you with the office of your representative.
If you do not know whether your representatives have signed on to H.R. 4088, you might call to inquire. If they haven't, ask them to sign on. It is important to build up momentum for passage in the House early next year. If that happens, it will encourage the Senate to follow suit. Also, make sure to contact your senators about supporting the SAVE act. You also can reach the Senate through our Legislative Action Center. (The Senate companion bill for H.R. 4088 is S. 2368.)
Below are the House members judged by Rep. Shuler's office to be prospects for signing on to H.R. 4088.
