Kennedy's Broken Promise
Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-MA) in his advocacy of legalizing illegal aliens, apparently doesn't remember a promise he once made. In 1982, in a letter to his colleagues on the Senate Judiciary Committee, Kennedy addressed the issue of legal status for illegal aliens in a pending bill. That measure foreshadowed the 1986 immigration bill that granted amnesty, for the first time, to illegals.
Said Kennedy, "A critical feature of [the bill] is the proposed legalization program. . . . It is both humane and sensible to undertake a one-time legalization program, as was unanimously recommended by the Select Commission."
The view that legalization should be just once, so as not to weaken our rule of law, was widely affirmed in both the Senate and House when they passed the 1986 amnesty. In 1990, Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) noted, "In fact, a compromise was agreed to back in 1986. There was a solemn vow that we would bring up amnesty one time, once, and only once, and there would be no more amnesty."
Letters for Agent Ramos
Ignacio Ramos, one of two Border Patrol agents recently sentenced to prison for violating the civil rights of an illegal alien drug smuggler, is now serving his 11-year term at a federal prison in Mississippi. According to americanpatrol.com (4/4/07), Ramos is confined to a prison cell 23 hours a day, with one hour out allowed for exercise. He is not allowed reading material, except for the Bible.
He can, however, receive letters. His family is urging Americans to write him to offer encouragement. Post cards are not allowed. Only a letter in an envelope. Letters must be addressed exactly as follows:
